Driving lessons with Hawkwell Driving Schools in Hockley - Rochford - Rayleigh - Southend - Benfleet - Leigh - Wickford - Woodham - Shoebury - Hadleigh - Westcliff - Basildon

"I learnt to drive with Alan and passed my test first time. Alan was patient and calm, even when i made squeaking noises. He never pushed me to try anything i wasn't ready for but also challenged me enough that i was progressing every week. His random expressions - "it's a clutch, not a foot rest" "lots of lovely mirrors" genuinely helped me to remember everything. As long as you can endure his jokes - "i'm just getting my binoculars so I can see the curb" - then i would recommend Alan to anyone." - Willow Scarisbrook, Thundersley

"Alan was the exact kind of instructor I was looking for - local, reliable, available at the times I wanted and good value for money. Alan never rushed me on any of my lessons, and knew exactly how far to challenge me each time and increase my confidence. I found Alan to be calm, chatty and very good at explaining things without being condescending. I found the website useful especially in preparation for my test. Alan prepared me so well for my test day, that I wasn't even nervous! I would happily recommend Alan to anyone thinking of driving lessons, and the trial lesson was a great idea!" - Angela Borst, Rayleigh

Making the right choice for your driving lessons:

When you decide to take driving lessons you have to make a number of choices. Firstly should you choose an independent driving instructor, or go with larger driving schools. Secondly whether to go for the cheapest driving lessons you can find, or pay a little more for a good instructor. And thirdly whether to take, an intensive driving course, or weekly lessons. It can be a difficult decision.

"Before I started my driving lessons with Alan, I had someone else, who I didn't really learn anything from. When I started with Alan, he taught me how to pull away very easily! He makes you feel comfortable when you're driving. He teaches you all the manoeuvres in a simple way so they're very easy and quick to learn" - Nicola Skeels, Hockley

We are a reliable and professional local driving school:

Alan is an independent instructor, who works on his own under the name of Hawkwell Driving School. This means that he takes full responsibility for booking driving lessons for his pupils, and their learning progress. His reputation is very important, especially in the local area, as he relies on recommendations from satisfied customers, so he will always do his utmost to make your learning experience enjoyable and productive.

The big advantage of choosing an independent driving instructor like Alan is that you are able to find out all you need to know about him before you book your driving lessons. This is why we tell you as much as possible about ourselves on this website, so that you can make an informed choice.

Whereas if you book with multi-car driving schools you will know nothing about the qualifications or experience of your driving instructor until they arrive on your doorstep. And although there is some peace of mind in booking with what is seen to be a large organisation, multi-car driving schools are usually just booking agencies for self-employed driving instructors.

"Alan is a friendly and relaxed instructor. You can go at your own pace and concentrate on your weaknesses and improve your strengths. Alan is very well prepared and lessons are structured with variety" - Nicola Avert, Ashingdon

A good driving instructor means less driving lessons:

When you were at school there were probably some teachers that you learnt a lot from, and some that you learnt very little from. It's quite likely that the ones you learnt most from were the ones that inspired you. They probably had the best subject knowledge, and the most experience of teaching the subject. The best teachers could explain things in a way that you could understand, whereas other teachers couldn't. They were all teachers, but not all of them could teach very well.

It's the same with driving instructors, they are all driving instructors, but not all have the qualifications, experience, knowledge, and aptitude to teach very well. And not all driving instructors use the best teaching techniques to enable you as an individual to learn to drive in the most effective way. Surprisingly many driving instructors still advocate and use the old-fashioned "instruction" method of teaching, and have not embraced modern coaching philosophy.

Coaching is a teaching method used in all sports training and is seen to be the most effective way to teach people new skills in an enjoyable way. Your driving lessons with Hawkwell Driving School will be less about driving instruction, and more about driving coaching.

Using coaching techniques means that we will always be supportive and non-judgmental, and we will concentrate on identifying your individual strengths and abilities, providing you with the means to progress. Our aim is to encourage you to be the best you can be, allowing you to reach the required standards for the driving test in the minimum amount of time.

Because we believe that the best way to learn is by doing, we keep you actually driving as much as possible on your driving lessons. This allows you the maximum amount of time to practice. (Unlike some driving schools we always keep roadside briefings to an absolute minimum).

And to ensure the very highest standards all our driver training is conducted by Alan who has over 25 years of learner driver teaching experience, and has also studied psychology and education at degree level. He has an excellent verifiable driving test pass rate, and an extensive array of Driving Standards Agency, and advanced driving qualifications from: the DSA, the Driving Instructors Association, the IAM, and RoSPA.

This means that we are able to teach you, not just the basics, but the subtleties that it takes to be an excellent and safe driver. Enabling you to understand not just what to do, but how to do it, and why: and inspiring you to reach your full potential.

No compromises on your driving lessons:

Although our driving lessons aren't the cheapest around we consider that they are the best value. When you learn to drive with us we teach you all the things that we feel are necessary for your continuing improvement, which include: 70mph roads, busy roundabouts, and driving out of the locality to towns such as Basildon, Brentwood, and Chelmsford. Unlike some schools we do not keep you in the local area to save fuel.

If you consider the price of petrol these days anyone offering cheap lessons is desperate for work and is probably either a trainee, or newly qualified. To save fuel they will then often try to spend as much time as possible, driving around housing estates, or by sitting at the side of the road with their engine off giving 'briefings'.

Therefore you can save money, and be a better, and safer, driver by learning to drive with us. Because excellent quality instruction, by an experienced professional teacher of driving, with no compromises to save fuel - means that you will need fewer driving lessons - and you are more likely to pass your driving test first time.

And if you take into account the cost of a driving test, the driving school's fees for the test day, and the lessons needed in-between each test in order to keep current - passing first time, as most of Alan's pupils do; and not the 6th time, which is not uncommon with some driving schools; could save you over a thousand pounds !

"I would recommend anyone who is looking to pass their test to contact Alan, he's the best instructor you could ever wish to be taught by! With his help, I managed to pass first time! The man works miracles!!! Many thanks Alan!" - James Poulson, Rayleigh

On your driving lessons you schedule your learning:

And perhaps your final decision is whether to take a 'crash' course, or learn in a more flexible, and less stressful way, by taking driving lessons over a longer period.

The Driving Standards Agency tell us that the average driver takes 47 hours of professional tuition to pass their driving test. So unless you have considerable experience already, learning to drive in a week long 'crash' course, is totally impractical, because you would have to drive for 9 hours per day.

However, because we know that some people do want to pass their driving test quickly, we have developed a high pass-rate, practical and effective type of intensive course that enables you to fit your lessons in around work, or college, over a 6 week period. Your driving test would be at the end of the course and you would have learnt everything that you need to know, and be fully prepared, to pass first time.

Alternatively, if you would prefer to learn to drive the way that most people do, in a more relaxed, conventional way, over a few months - we can arrange single hour, one-and-a-half hour, or two-hour, driving lessons each week, or whenever you require.  This gives you much more time to take in all the information you will have learnt, to think about situations you have encountered, and the opportunity to spread out the costs.

Your schedule, be it weekly lessons or an intensive course, is entirely up to you, and Alan will always do his best to accommodate your requirements.

"alan is a great to learn with, i passed first time with him. He managed to explain each maneuver so that i could understand them easier, i enjoyed every lesson and recommend him to any new drivers in the hockley and rayleigh area" - Craig Vile, Hawkwell

2- hour trial driving lessons for only £30

And because we know that it's important for you to know that you can get along with your driving instructor on your lessons, we are able to offer you a two-hour no-obligation trial driving lesson where you can meet Alan, discuss your requirements, and decide if you want Alan as your instructor, and Hawkwell Driving School as your driving school.

"i would definitely recommend to learn to drive with alan. Brilliant instructor. i managed to pass first time last week! thanks again" - Emily Leverington, Hockley

Our driving schools web site:

Alan has written a number of pages for this site explaining what you need to know about driving lessons, the driving test, and how you can improve your driving skills. Because of his years of teaching experience, large vehicle driving experience, and advanced driving experience, he is able to not just tell you what you need to do, but how to do it. He is also able to explain in detail why certain things should be done, and how they can be achieved.

If you are browsing the web looking for driving schools you will see many very badly written websites. Usually they will have been authored by the owners / instructors themselves. One thing to consider is that if they are unable to express methods and techniques clearly on their websites, they probably won't be able to express methods and techniques clearly in their car on lessons.

"Alan is calm, patient, reliable, good at explaining things and easy to talk to." - Karen Benton, Rayleigh.
